Common Light Switch Issues

What's Up With Your Light Switch?

Every homeowner will experience lighting issues at some point. As with most things, it's just a matter of time. But replacing light bulbs can only help so much, as many lighting issues have their root in the switch itself. Unless the root cause is fixed, lighting problems won't stop popping up. Thankfully, many light switch issues are easy to fix.

Is There a Fixture Problem?

There are several lighting fixtures in the average home. These include ceiling fans, chandeliers, and other lighting implements that aren't controlled at the light source but are rather controlled by a light switch.

For the most part, light fixtures work without issue year-around. But every so often, significant problems occur. If a fixture has light bulbs burning out, not turning on or working for a short amount of time and then stopping for no apparent reason, there might be a problem with the fixture itself. Homeowners could check the wiring and troubleshoot why their unit might be having problems.

More often than not, however, the issue isn't with the unit - it's with the light switch. If the switch breaks, the unit might have the same signs and symptoms as if the problems were with the fixture itself. Broken switches aren't often thought of or identified quickly, so it might take ruling out problems with the light fixture to start looking at and assessing a broken switch.

Check for a Broken Connection

The most common issue when light switches start to fail is due to a broken connection. Broken connections come from wiring issues. When writing isn't properly connected to the light switch, it can send incorrect signals to the light fixture. This is a common reason why the lights might come on and then blink out even though the lightbulbs don't need to be replaced.

If a light switch has a broken connection, there are a few signs to look for. If the lighting flickers or dims when turned on, a wiring connection is probably to blame. Another tell-tale sign is a crackling sound when flipping the switch. This sound comes from an electrical short in the wiring behind the switch.

Check for a Loose Toggle

If the wiring is sound, the next place to look is the toggle. There is a toggle attached to the switch that allows or shuts off power depending on how it is flipped. If this toggle isn't correctly in place, it could remain in the "off" position even when flipping the switch "on." This can be determined by how loose the toggle is when touched.

As with any issue, it's always best to call a certified electrician to check the fixture, the wiring or the toggle. Even though these may sound like simple fixes, electrical issues can become extremely hazardous if not approached correctly with proper technique and know-how.
